Regular grooming at home does not need to be complicated. A consistent routine makes it easier to notice tangles, dirt and changes in the coat before they become harder to manage. The exact routine depends on your dog's coat type, activity level and individual needs. Curly, wavy and oodle-type coats can need extra attention because loose hair and tangles can sit deeper within the coat.
Start with a calm check of the coat
Before brushing, run your hands gently over the coat and look for obvious tangles, debris or sensitive areas. On curly or oodle coats, pay extra attention behind the ears, under the legs, around the collar and chest, and around the tail where knots can form more easily. If the skin looks sore, inflamed or unusually irritated, avoid working aggressively over that area and seek veterinary advice where appropriate.
If you find a tight mat close to the skin, do not pull hard or try to cut blindly into it. Heavily matted areas are often better handled by a professional groomer.
Use a grooming tool suited to the coat
Different brushes and combs are designed for different jobs. A slicker-style brush may be useful for working through sections of coat, while a comb can help check whether small tangles remain. Detangle section by section
Once the coat has been towel-dried, work through it in small sections. On longer hair, hold the coat gently with one hand while brushing below your hand with the other to reduce pulling against the skin. Start at the ends and gradually work upwards. Do not force a brush through a resistant knot. If an area is pulling heavily on the skin or cannot be worked through comfortably, stop and reassess it rather than repeatedly brushing the same spot.
Finish and check
